The scholarship was
established in the memory of Frank Finocchiaro, a founding members of the
Italian Society of Savannah and a Benedictine alumnus, Class of 1944. The
purpose of the scholarship award is to promote an appreciation of Italian arts,
science, culture, heritage and contributions to our nation. Applicants are
accepted from the Benedictine Military School, Bethesda Academy and St. Vincent’s
Academy, and one winner from each school is awarded $1,000, applicable towards
senior year tuition.
An evaluation committee comprised of Italian Society members selects the winner
from each school. The judges consider the depth of thought, the quality and
presentation as well as the development of ideas. Theme and exposition carry
the most weight, but command of vocabulary, sentence structure and spelling is
also considered.
